The surgeon said that it was much more complex than he originally thought and took double the amount of metal and pins than he anticipated. He showed me the x-rays and it looked crazy. He doesn't know if it will require more surgeries as only time will tell. During the surgery Will's blood sugar levels spiked and went up too high so they gave him some insulin and then it went too low. They had to give him sugar water in his IV and then it went too high again...needless to say the surgery took longer and we wondered if he would ever get out of recovery. Maggie Will's Mom joined me today which was very nice. At one point the nurse came out and said that they were going to get him dressed and sit up a little in a recliner and come and get us so we could be with him as he was becoming more alert but after 1 hr 10 minutes we both began to worry so we stood right by the door and caught the next surgeon as he walked out. The 2 doctors and nurse told me that this is a very serious surgery that it is extremely painful when they go through the bone with pins etc. They put him under of course for the surgery but also gave him a block in his shoulder because they were going through so much bone. The pain levels were too high as well to release him so after being there from 8:30am they finally released him at about 4:30 or 5pm but before we could drive out of the parking lot he vomited 3 times. I felt so bad for him. His fingers are so swollen they look they are going to burst. He has a cast/splint on up past his elbow and will have it for probably 8 weeks. We go back to the surgeon's office in 10 days. He has to be watched 24/7 for the next 48 hours. He can't walk by himself either. I also have to rub his legs and he has those thigh high tight things on to try and help avoid blood clots. I have to elevate his arm and ice it every couple of hours and check his fingers and make him move them which is painful. They said that the meds will only take the edge off of the pain that it won't go away anytime soon. He is so nauseated and pale it makes me want to cry.
